Solar Panel Installation at West Grove Primary School

Client: Enfield Council

Appointed Contractor: Aston Group

Framework: Retrofit and Decarbonisation (N9) Framework

Project Value: £73,412.66

About the Project

Enfield Council used LHC's Retrofit and Decarbonisation (N9) framework to appoint Aston Group Ltd for a solar panel installation at West Grove Primary School. The project was one of four school energy improvements funded by the Greater London Authority's (GLA) Greener Schools Grant.

This initiative supports the objectives of the Mayor of London's Zero Carbon Accelerator, aiding boroughs in reducing emissions from public buildings and advancing towards a 2030 net zero target. West Grove, the largest of the four schools with over 400 pupils and a substantial two-storey building, was an ideal candidate for the scheme.

The Challenge

The primary challenge was an exceptionally tight timeframe. Official project approval was granted at the end of July 2025, requiring completion before the school term began in September. This demanded thorough planning and efficient delivery across all stages from scaffolding and logistics to installation, commissioning, and handover within a matter of weeks.

The Solution

Aston Group conducted a detailed feasibility study in partnership with their solar specialist. Using dedicated software, they optimised the panel layout to maximise the use of available roof space, avoid shade from obstructions,  and ensure high year-round energy yield. This collaborative approach enhanced the original plans and de-risked the project to guarantee timely delivery.

The Results

The final installation comprised 110 high-efficiency solar panels connected to a dedicated inverter. HelioScope modelling confirmed excellent solar access, maximising the system's long-term performance.

On-site work commenced on 18 August 2025. The installation, including all commissioning and the removal of scaffolding, was completed safely, on budget, and within just five working days, by 22 August 2025.

Client Feedback

“Overall, Aston Group has been a pleasure to work with, and we’d definitely recommend them,” said Sid Yaseen, Premises Manager at West Grove Primary School.

Benefits Delivered

Financial savings: The system is projected to generate over 42,000 kWh of clean electricity annually, saving the school approximately £22,000 per year on energy bills. Over the system's lifetime, this could equate to savings exceeding £830,000.

Carbon reduction: The installation will cut the school's carbon emissions by an estimated 11 tonnes per year.

Educational value: The project provides an example for pupils, demonstrating renewable technology in action and helping to embed sustainability into the school's culture.
