Farah’s Volunteer Day: Finding Connection and Strength at ECC

Farah, here, the Marketing and Communications Officer at LHC.

Like many of us, I’m a firm believer in the power of physical activity. It’s my personal outlet for stress, a source of energy, and a key part of my wellbeing. So, when LHC offered us 1.5 volunteer days, I knew I wanted to spend it with a charity that shares this passion. That’s how I found myself at Every Contact Counts (ECC), a charity dedicated to using fitness to empower some of the most vulnerable people in our community.

Their mission is to engage socially marginalised individuals through sport, resonated deeply with me. I understand that the benefits of movement go far beyond the physical; it’s about community, mental clarity, and reclaiming a sense of self. My time with ECC was a powerful, humbling, and joyful reminder of just that.

A day in the life of a community champion

My volunteer time was a whirlwind of four different sessions, each one unique and inspiring in its own way.

The 5k Run Club

This was an evening session, I joined the 5k Run Club, a beautifully mixed group that perfectly represents ECC’s inclusive ethos. There were community members who just wanted to get some fresh air and exercise alongside others who had been referred by the NHS to support their mental health journeys. Running together, regardless of pace or background, created a powerful sense of shared purpose. It was a living example of how a simple activity like running can be a form of therapy, a community builder, all at once.

It was great to be part of encouraging this group to keep going.

Alzheimer’s Fitness Session

The morning started with a impactful Alzheimer’s fitness session. Philip Ankrah founder of ECC explained the powerful science behind it: regular aerobic and resistance exercise can help reduce inflammation, slow the accumulation of amyloid plaques associated with the illness, and directly improve memory, thinking, and mood. But beyond this, the true magic was in the room's atmosphere. For that hour, participants were fully engaged and celebrated for their efforts. It was a powerful testament to how targeted physical activity can actively fight the progression of the illness while immensely improving the quality of life for those living with it.

Over 60’s ladies only Circuit Class

The afternoon started with energy and laughter at the over 60’s circuit class. This wasn't just a fitness session; it was a social hub. I saw a group of women with a common goal, to improve their health and wellbeing while being surrounded by like-minded friends. I helped the founder, Philip Ankrah, set up and pack away the equipment, but my real role was to join in, offer encouragement, and witness firsthand how this class builds not just strength, but lasting friendships that are a vital defence against loneliness.

Dementia Fitness Session

Next was a truly moving session dedicated to individuals living with dementia. This was a seated fitness class, designed to be safe. As I watched the participants engage, I was reminded of the science behind it: exercise improves blood flow to the brain, aiding cognitive function and memory, while also building crucial physical strength and balance.

But what struck me most was the feeling in the room. During this session, these individuals weren't defined by their condition. They were valued participants, achieving small victories and sharing moments of connection. ECC creates a space where they feel seen and important, and even if it's just once a week, it clearly makes a world of difference to them.

The effect of a single session

Throughout my volunteer time, I saw that ECC’s impact extends far beyond the sessions I attended. Philip Ankrah spoke passionately about their work with disabled individuals and their boxing sessions that provide a constructive outlet for anger and frustration for those from vulnerable backgrounds. They truly meet people where they are, using different sports as tools for empowerment.

The dedication of Philip Ankrah and his team of volunteers was inspiring. They operate with immense compassion and pride, focusing on ability rather than limitation. They are not just fitness instructors; they are builders of confidence.

A reminder of how fitness helps wellbeing

Fitness is a universal language of hope and strength. This charity isn't just about getting people active; it's about rebuilding lives, one session at a time. Volunteering for a charity  that massively improves people’s wellbeing made me understand why charities like ECC are so important.

I am so grateful for the experience and will carry the stories and smiles I encountered with me. If you are ever looking for a cause that demonstrates the  life-changing power of community and sport, look no further than Every Contact Counts.

LHC staff volunteer days

At LHC, our commitment to social value is at the heart of what we do. We live our values by empowering our employees to shape and deliver social value in the communities where they live and work. Our staff are given 1.5 days of paid leave to volunteer for a registered charity, and we take great pride in their collective efforts to support causes close to their hearts.
