More than a fresh coat: LHC revitalise the Somaliland Community Centre

Yesterday, the LHC team traded their usual workstations for paint rollers and cleaning supplies, spending a day volunteering at the West London Somaliland Community Centre. It was a day filled with hard work, purpose, and the powerful reminder of what a community can achieve when it comes together.

We were warmly welcomed by Liban, the centre's chairman, who shared his inspiring story and the ongoing challenges of the charity. Established in 2007, the centre was founded to be a supportive environment, fostering a sense of safety and collaboration for the local community.

A lifeline for the community

Liban explained that the centre serves as a crucial safe haven for local youth, many of whom lack positive role models and are exposed to potentially dangerous situations. Beyond that, it also acts as a gathering place for the elderly, helping to combat loneliness and support mental health. It’s a place where everyone is welcome.

However, this lifeline faces constant challenges. While initial grants helped launch the centre, language barriers and a complex application process have made securing ongoing funding difficult. Today, every single person working at the centre is an unpaid volunteer.

A day of making a difference for those who use the centre

Our mission for the day was clear, roll up our sleeves and help transform their main space into a brighter, more welcoming, and relaxing environment for everyone who uses it.

The team got straight to work

They started by moving all the furniture to create space to paint. Next, they dusted, swept, and wiped down every surface, clearing away any grime and dust. Finally, painting started with energy and enthusiasm; they applied not one, but two fresh coats of paint, watching as the room was utterly transformed into a better place.

By the afternoon, the centre felt completely new. The clean, bright walls radiated a sense of calm and possibility, a blank slate for the community to build upon.

The real value of the work

The gratitude from Liban and the others in the community was heartfelt. While we came to paint walls, we left with a much deeper understanding. Our work wasn't just about aesthetics; it was about showing solidarity. It was about giving a group of dedicated volunteers a renewed space that matches the incredible value of the work they do every single day.

The Somaliland Community Centre is a testament to the power of community spirit. At LHC, we are proud to have played a small part in supporting their essential mission and are inspired by their continued commitment to creating a safer, healthier, and more connected community for all.
