Community Benefit Fund: PLIAS Resettlement

County: Brent, London

Funding Theme: A programme to Increase the employability of beneficiaries.

Amount Secured: £5,000

About the project

The project aimed to run a programme to increase the employability of beneficiaries, provide them with training to improve employment prospects, and reduce the risks associated with re-offending.

Mission

From the beginning, the main objective has been to provide services, primarily targeting offenders and ex-offenders, to support their reintegration into society.

Their mission for this project was to:

  • Engage with fifteen young people throughout the programme.
  • Train fifteen young people with skills such as a construction qualification.
  • Secure employment for five young people.

Impact

Here is an example of how it impacted Mr L, who used this service:

Mr L was referred to the project via the Brent Youth Offending Service. Mr L had been excluded from school, achieved only 3 GCSE's and was convicted of assault. They assigned a mentor to Mr L, who worked alongside his caseworker to provide one-to-one support. Mr L attended the PLIAS offices to prepare for the construction health and safety course and undertake mock CSCS tests. Mr L completed the Construction Health and Safety Course and passed the CSCS test.

Moving Forward

This personalised employability support dramatically improved Mr L's confidence and chances of securing employment. Mr L attended a construction day hosted by Burrows Construction and is looking for a carpentry apprenticeship.

The work with Mr L is ongoing, and he has given us positive feedback regarding the support he has received. Mr L is more hopeful about his future, and we look forward to helping him take the next step toward employment.

About LHC Community Benefit Fund

In each region, LHC members have the opportunity to create and distribute a Community Benefit Fund generated from the rebate they receive if they spend over a specified threshold on LHC frameworks. Further, an independent community benefit agency is also appointed to work with the members to find a local charity partner. LHC works closely with the specialist community support network ‘Locality’.
